It’s a basic and straightforward dish that anyone can whip up in minutes with just a few pantry ingredients. When combined with rice, potatoes produce a unique flavor and scent that is ideal for serving lunch or dinner.

People prepare it differently based on their region and personal preference. Some people prefer it white since they do not use turmeric powder, while others use it for the yellow hue of the rice, which distinguishes it from other Indian rice recipes.

Basmati rice and starchy potatoes are used to make turmeric potato rice or aloo ki tahari. It is a type of vegetable pulao that can be served alongside kabab and raita.

Hyderabadi tahiri is renowned for its distinctive flavor and scent. Similarly, Bengali tahari is renowned for using meat during cooking.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Turmeric?

The jury is still out on turmeric’s exact health benefits. Curcumin, found in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These are beneficial for many things, including improving brain function and battling cancer and heart problems. But turmeric only has 3% curcumin, and curcumin isn’t very well absorbed by the body. Nevertheless, regardless of whether turmeric possesses amazing healing properties, it is still a healthy addition to food.

Here are some other turmeric health prosperities:

Antioxidant: Curcumin is an antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals which can cause DNA mutations.

Anti-Inflammatory: Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties that are comparable to those of several anti-inflammatory medications, including cortisone and phenylbutazone without the negative side effects.

Cancer Prevention: Curcumin prevents the carcinogenic properties of cigarette smoke, barbecue smoke, and all forms of smoke.

Liver-Protective: It has been demonstrated that curcumin protects the liver and is highly effective in boosting bile release, which aids in the digestion of fat.

Super Brain Functions: Curcumin slows mental decline. By eliminating the brain’s amyloid plaque buildup, it may stop the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or at least reduce its progression.

Wound Healing: Cuts and burns are protected from infection by natural antiseptic and antibacterial substances in turmeric.

Natural Pain Killer: Reduces the perception of chronic pain naturally. More of this, please!

Kills the bad guys: There are various harmful fungi and bacteria that curcumin is effective at killing, such as Streptococcus, Entamoeba histolytics, and several other bacteria.

Reduce Depression: A key component of Chinese medicine for boosting mood in depressive conditions.

Promote Weight Loss: Aids in weight management and fat metabolism.

Storage And Reheating

This rice dish is simple to make in big quantities, and it keeps well in the fridge. Simply place the rice in sealed containers and reheat it in the microwave to enjoy later! By far, this is the finest method for keeping your rice moist and fresh.

When preparing meals on a weekly basis, you can keep them in airtight containers or zip-top bags; just make sure to remove air as much as you can before sealing the bag. Keep refrigerated for up to one week

Reheated rice with a little splash of water on top, and it should be stirred every 30 – 50 seconds in a medium-power microwave until it is hot.

Tips And Tricks

  • The best rice to use is basmati. This dish has only been tested with basmati rice, however, you can use any long-grain rice.
  • Rice should be soaked for at least 20 minutes. Rice grains swell as a result of moisture absorption during their soak. They cook well while expanding. You will therefore receive fluffy, well-cooked long grain rice with turmeric.
  • To avoid making sticky, gooey rice, wash the rice to remove any dust and extra starch. Simply rinse the rice with cold water through a fine-mesh strainer until the water flows clear.
  • Make use of any fresh or frozen vegetables you have available.
  • Be sure to adhere to a 1:2 ratio at all times. If you’re making one cup of rice, you’ll need two cups of stock or water.
  • To cook rice, always bring water or stock to a boil first.
  • During the cooking process, don’t stir the rice. The grains can become broken and mushy if you stir frequently.
  • The most important step is to leave your rice covered for 10 minutes after turning off the heat. Keep the lid closed.
  • To prevent the grains from sticking together, carefully mix and lift the rice with a spoon or thin spatula.

Some Variations

You can enjoy this delicious potato rice just as is, or for variety and pleasure, you can try it in several other ways.

  • Try pairing potatoes with peas, carrots, or corn.
  • Taco seasoning can be used to make this rice in place of the cumin and turmeric.
  • To add more crunch and taste, sprinkle some toasted nuts over top.
  • Use fresh herbs such as mint, coriander, and basil to infuse the dish with vibrant tastes.
