If your kids are anything like my three-year-old, they probably want to try anything you are eating or drinking. I seriously wish I could have a dollar each time he asked me to share. One of his favorite things to share is smoothies. I recall one time I was photographing a Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothie when he was smaller and didn’t have such an extensive vocabulary, and he watched me the entire time yelling, “Smoooooooothiieeeee!!! Smoooooooothiiiieeeeee!!”.

He has now progressed to, “Mommy, can I please have some of your Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie, please, Mommy, please please?!” So while I originally started making this Peanut Butter & Jelly Green Smoothie for myself, more often than not, it’s a smoothie for two.

This recipe is extremely versatile – fresh or frozen fruit, plain or flavored yogurt, all based on what’s in your fridge, what’s your favorite, and how sweet you want it. And if you have any peanut allergies – almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower seed butter would all be awesome.

If you or your kids have been a little hesitant to jump on the green smoothie bandwagon, this is the perfect place to start. And though this truly can be said of many green smoothie recipes, with all the fruity nuttiness going on, you definitely won’t be tasting those dark leafies. And my little trick for green smoothie newbies – start with baby spinach. It has a much more neutral flavor than others, such as kale, and is very tender, so it completely disappears when you blend up the smoothie. While I like to be totally up front with my little guy about the fact that I am putting “green stuff” in his smoothie, if the whole idea freaks your kids out, then a smoothie like this that gets a deep purple color from berries, or something like this Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Smoothie are perfect for hiding the green color. Or skip the greens altogether. It’s cool. They are still getting fruit and protein and calcium. That is, if you are willing to share with them after you realize how much you love it yourself.
