Is it safe to press reset button on water heater? ›

This mechanism comes in the form of a reset button. When the water temperature climbs too high, the reset button automatically shuts the unit off to protect it from overheating. Ideally, this button is only activated in emergencies.

Often, though, it happens because: The unit's thermostat is faulty. The reset button itself is malfunctioning. The part of the unit that prevents water from getting too hot—the high-limit switch—is no longer working.

Step 3: Press and hold the reset button for three to five seconds. Step 4: Once all the lights are off, release the reset button and wait a few minutes to allow the water heater to reset. Step 5: Finally, wait another thirty seconds before turning on your faucets—you should hear them starting up right away!
